With Blue Manatee Literacy Project, for every book you purchase with us, we donate a book to a child in the Cincinnati area who might not have access to one. It doesn't matter what book you buy, whether YA, adult fiction, picture book, early reader--we still donate a children's book to a child in need. YOUR love of reading helps spread that love all across the Queen City!

40% of children entering kindergarten in disadvantaged neighborhoods struggle to read at grade level. 75% of those same students remain at a similar risk as they enter third grade. 80% of preschool and after-school programs that serve low income populations have no age appropriate reading materials. That's where you come in.

BMLP serves readers of all ages from infant to adult, and reaches far beyond the four walls that make up the Oakley retail space. For every book purchased with BMLP—either in-store or online—a book is donated to an under-resourced child. In partnership with local schools, educators, volunteers and staff, donated books help build classroom and home libraries, with books in varying reading levels and written by own-voices authors. Pop-up bookstores with donated books, author visits to classrooms and schools, booths at local flea markets and holiday markets and more.

Over the last two years, with the support of the Greater Cincinnati community, BMLP has donated over 45,000 books. Exciting plans are moving forward on expanding the mission of getting books into the hands of all Cincinnati area students. This new initiative will soon be announced to the public and will greatly impact the students throughout the region.

A small but mighty team, BMLP’s mission is to spread the love of reading to all children across Cincinnati—in the hopes that we will watch them grow and flourish, and continue to spread that love of reading throughout their life. It is a hope that started with a story, one told with the love and care shown by Dr. John Hutton and Sandra Gross. BMLP’s mission began because of their original devotion to the children of Cincinnati, and we hope to honor them and those children for years to come.
