Belgium - Legal Aid in the Military!

Update posted 1 year ago

Former Pro Seniors' Legal Intern Benjamin Thomas checked in with us from Belgium, where he currently serves as the U.S. Army legal assistance attorney stationed at SHAPE*.  Legal assistance is essentially military Legal Aid.

Benjamin says, "The difference being, as a Judge Advocate (JAG) attorney, I am limited in services and cannot represent clients in court.  I do a lot of consults for clients on things like divorce and separation, child support, child custody, immigration, debt collection, SCRA, NATO SOFA, Taxes, POAs and estate planning. It is very interesting and fulfilling work." (*Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, or SHAPE, is located in Casteau near Mons, Belgium.)

Your gift today will support the Rhonda Y. Moore Fellowship, to engage students/recent graduates in hands-on learning with our staff of attorneys, ombudsmen and educators, to continue the important work of Pro Seniors.  Funds raised will provide a stipend to the selected fellow in support of their service hours for Pro Seniors.

Pro Seniors’ Executive Director, Dimity V. Orlet remarked, “Rhonda has provided exceptional leadership, and I welcome this opportunity to build on her inspiring accomplishments with this fellowship that advances our work for Ohio seniors.”

With 14 years as an attorney in private practice, Rhonda Moore was recruited in 2001 to lead Pro Seniors.  She brought her dedication to seniors and her sharp legal mind to each of her responsibilities.  Although justice is often not a reality for many seniors because they just aren’t able to afford the assistance of a lawyer, with a moderate amount of legal help, seniors can solve their often complicated legal problems, thrive and have the quality of life they deserve.  Under Rhonda's leadership, seniors have kept their homes, left abusive situations, prepared their wills, navigated a complicated health care world, dealt with consumer debt, and more. Rhonda is also emphatic in her promotion of accurate, positive images of ageing, to combat the damaging negative stereotypes of aging that contribute to elder abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Rhonda is incredibly modest and always pointed to her staff when she was complimented for Pro Seniors’ accomplishments.  In 2015 a group of board members nominated her for an award without her knowledge, and the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation honored Rhonda with the Denis Murphy Award for her outstanding leadership and advocacy for Ohio's seniors.  When she accepted the award, she said, “I’ve been very privileged to be a part of Pro Seniors . . . and play a role in securing access to justice for Ohio seniors.  My role is a supporting role, however, and it’s really the fine advocates on Pro Seniors’ staff who carry out our mission.  Our lawyers – as well as our ombudsman, SMP advocates and administrative staff – really do change lives.”  But, we all know that an excellent staff needs an excellent leader and Rhonda was just that!  Even in her retirement, Rhonda continues to have a positive impact on Pro Seniors.  As you can see in the video below, Rhonda Y. Moore is an excellent advocate for Ohio seniors.

Please join us in giving a gift to support the Rhonda Y. Moore Fellowship, to support mentoring of students and recent graduates who choose to follow in Rhonda's footsteps by contributing to Pro Seniors' advocacy.
